🛠️ Plumber’s Cold Weather Prep Guide
1. Protect Pipes
Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawlspaces, attics, garages, and exterior walls.
Use foam pipe sleeves, heat tape, or insulation wrap.
For mobile homes or older houses, consider skirting/insulating underneath.
2. Faucets & Fixtures
Disconnect outdoor hoses and install insulated faucet covers.
Shut off and drain outdoor spigots if possible.
In extreme cold, let indoor faucets drip slightly — especially those on exterior walls.
3. Water Heaters
Flush your water heater to remove sediment (helps efficiency).
Insulate the tank and hot water pipes to reduce heat loss.
4. Emergency Prep
Show the household where the main water shut-off valve is located.
Keep a pipe repair kit or temporary patch materials on hand.
Know a reliable plumber to call if a line bursts.
5. Prevent Freezing Indoors
Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air reach pipes.
Keep the thermostat at a steady temperature (don’t let the house drop too low at night or while away).
